Women's health is a core part of family medicine
Family medicine physicians and nurse practitioners are fully trained to provide the routine women's health care that most women need each year — well-woman exams, cervical cancer screening, breast health, contraception, and menopause care. You don't have to see a separate specialist for these visits, and because we already know you as a whole person, we can integrate reproductive and hormonal care with the rest of your health picture — blood pressure, thyroid, mental health, chronic conditions, and family history.
What a well-woman visit includes
Preventive exam
Comprehensive review of your health history, medications, family history, and current concerns. Blood pressure, weight, and general physical exam.
Cervical cancer screening
Pap smear and HPV testing based on age and risk following current USPSTF and ACOG guidelines. Every 3 years for most women 21-29; every 5 years with HPV co-testing for most women 30-65.
Breast health
Clinical breast exam and personalized mammogram scheduling based on age, family history, and risk factors.
Age-appropriate screening
Bone density, colon cancer screening, cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, and depression screening as indicated by age and risk.
Contraception and family planning
We discuss the full range of contraception options with you and choose together based on your goals, medical history, and preferences. We prescribe:
- Oral contraceptive pills — combined estrogen-progestin and progestin-only options
- The patch and vaginal ring — for women who prefer not to take a daily pill
- Depo-Provera injection — administered in the clinic every 3 months
- Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) — IUDs (hormonal and copper) and Nexplanon arm implants, placed in-house at both the Crete and Lincoln clinics
- Emergency contraception — same-day counseling and prescription
- Preconception counseling — when you're planning a pregnancy, we help optimize your health first
Menopause and perimenopause
Perimenopause and menopause can affect sleep, mood, energy, sexual health, bone density, and cardiovascular risk. We take these symptoms seriously and offer:
- Evaluation of hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, and vaginal symptoms
- Discussion of hormone therapy (HT) — benefits, risks, and whether it's appropriate for you
- Non-hormonal medication options for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormones
- Bone density screening and prevention of osteoporosis
- Cardiovascular risk reduction — because heart disease risk rises after menopause
Bilingual women's health care
Dr. Gutiérrez and Jessica Hernandez Leon, FNP are both bilingual English and Spanish. Sensitive conversations about reproductive health, contraception, sexual health, and menopause are easier when they happen in the language you're most comfortable in. See our página en español.
Prenatal and pregnancy care
If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, we provide complete OB care — from preconception counseling through delivery. Dr. Gutiérrez performs deliveries at Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln.

Where we provide women's health care
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to see an OB/GYN for a well-woman exam?
No. Family medicine physicians and family nurse practitioners are trained to provide routine women's health care including annual well-woman exams, Pap smears, breast exams, contraception, and menopause management. You only need an OB/GYN for pregnancy care (which we also provide through our OB service) or specialized gynecologic surgery.
Is my well-woman visit confidential?
Yes. All visits are confidential and protected by HIPAA. Adolescent well-woman visits include time alone with the provider to discuss confidential topics per Nebraska law.
Do you offer STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing?
Yes. Confidential STI screening and treatment are available at every visit. Testing can be done at your well-woman visit or as a separate visit.
How often should I have a Pap smear?
Every 3 years starting at age 21 (or every 5 years with HPV co-testing after age 30) for most women, per current USPSTF and ACOG guidelines. We personalize the schedule based on your prior results and risk factors.
Do you accept Medicaid for women's health services?
Yes. We accept Nebraska Medicaid Heritage Health (Nebraska Total Care, Molina, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan) plus most commercial and Medicare plans. Preventive well-woman visits are typically covered at 100% under most plans.
